It's human nature–most of us naturally do what is easiest and most comfortable. Unfortunately, that does not usually help your English improve. Of course, you want to stay in touch with your friends and family back home in your country. There's nothing wrong with that. The problem is that many of you spend too much time on the Internet, on the phone, or in person with people who speak your same language. The only thing that improves is your relationship with your friends.

Most language schools try to place you in the correct level, but sometimes it doesn't work so well. Maybe the classes are too easy for you. We have had students who flunk a test because they wanted be in an easier level. The problem–it's too easy and you get bored. Other students try to keep up in their classes, but they need more time. They feel frustrated and oftentimes quit and move to a different language program.

The problem is most language programs focus on their curriculum, not on you, the individual student. They have to cover all the materials for that level. Even if you do not understand the materials, they have to keep going so they can stay on schedule.

It can be great to live in a dorm (you get to be with other people your age and you don't have many responsibilities), but during vacations it can get really lonely because most of the other students are with family or are traveling to different places. If you choose to live with a host family, you might have people around you, but most families are very busy, so even if they are home, they may not have much time to spend with you. It can be a lonely place, as well.

Does American culture seem interesting, strange, or confusing to you? Do you wonder why Americans do what they do? It might be seen as rude or impolite to ask a host family why they do what they do, and teachers in your language program may not have time to answer all your questions.

Living in the city can be both exciting and scary. It is fun for many people to go shopping, visit museums, and watch live sports games. But the crime rate is higher in cities than in rural areas. People also feel more stress in the city than in the country. There is so much going on that they feel they can't handle it all.
